Large Antique Russian Icon Oil Painting of the Ascension of Christ. A stunning oil on wood Russian Icon oil painting of the Ascension of Christ. Jesus is rising up to heaven and his Mother Mary and his followers are praying as he ascends. This is a very old work of art and is beautifully painted. Much of the top part of the painting is in gilt and is ornately incised. The colours are still clear and bright for its age. Frame: Un-framed Provenance: German Private Collection. There is a very old partial label on the reverse for either a Berlin exhibition or gallery. Condition: The paint is generally sound with very few signs of wear. Small patch of raised paint on the cloak of Jesus. The thick oak panel is bowed and there is a minimal vertical split in the lower right hand area (Please see photos). There is some light craquelure commensurate with age. One of the horizontal bars on the reverse is missing. Measurements: Painting measures 96 x 54cm x 3cm (depth).
