You are looking at an antique Victorian German Religious Hair Art Wreath in a shadow box surrounding a wax baby Jesus (I think it’s wax, since His right hand looks missing-but I do not see it in the shadow box – so whoever made this might have cut it off to fit Him in where He is). The shadow box has a beautiful wreath of flowers made of dark brown hair and with a hair flower on top of Jesus and on the bottom as well (embellished with colorful beads as well). The hair is attached to a cardstock piece (the shadow box is completely made of cardstock, except for the wood frame) and on the inside there is gold colored embossed paper appliques surrounding the hair piece in many different styles. In each of the 4 corners there are pink (some faded) fake flowers of either a silk material or paper as well as some fake leaves of a red color (kind of like baby’s breath, but in red) and green paper leaves. There is glass protecting the hair. The shadow box has a wood frame covered in a brown gesso (some chips in the gesso, see close up pic). The back of the shadow box has a brown paper covering the back of it as well as a piece of German advertisement or something like it. The frame is about 13.5″ x 11.25″ x 2.25.
