German Medieval Renaissance, Religious Old Master, Saint Sophia, 1400’s Large Antique Oil Painting. An extremely rare survival and unseen for decades, large scale medieval German oil or tempera on canvas depicting St Sophia as mother to her daughters, Faith, Hope and Charity. With Saint Sophia at left with her daughters Saints Faith, Hope and Charity holding their saintly attributes, breasts on a platter, scourge, rack and stake with daggers to breast etc. Also featuring the Holy All Seeing Eye at upper centre, representing The Almighty God. This was often included in very early northern european religious paintings. Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries the Freemasons used the symbol in their iconography. Early fifteenth century and still with bright colouring of the various elements, description in Latin beneath each figure, housed in an ebonised wooden frame. Condition-wise the painting is good, commensurate with age, but with expected edge losses and small pinholes at various points. The image dimensions are approximately: 31 1/4” x 24 1/2” (79.5cm x 61cm). F rom my own modest collection and prior to my ownership with a long held private collection in Norfolk, England. Not normally seen on the open market, paintings of this pedigree are more usually confined to museums and expensive private collections.
