A classical bronze-cast antique Khmer style Buddha crowned, a bust sculpted in the popular late Angkor / early Bayon style, an ancient mix of Hindu and Buddhist art and culture. This beautiful and sensitive rendering by the artisans of the northern Khmer provinces, the Crowned Buddha, was a popular motif in contrast to the more common Buddha. Reminscent of work produced in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it became common for representations of Buddha to be integrally decorated with jewellery and headwear to associate the divine with the ruling monarch. Sculptures of this appearance would have been on display in the most sacred and revered shrines within the great temples of the Angkor Era, emblazoned with gold finery, colourful banners and surrounded by incense and jewels.
