1920s Antique Religious Portrait Diptych – Christ Child & Christ in Gethsemane. A beautifully evocative pair of early 20th-century religious portraits, this antique devotional set presents two distinct chapters in the life of Christ, from the serene innocence of childhood to the solemn spiritual intensity of prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Together, the two works create a compelling and deeply atmospheric pairing, united by their warm coloration, luminous treatment of the figure, and unmistakable devotional character. The smaller portrait depicts the Christ Child, presented with softly illuminated features and a radiant halo. Particularly noteworthy is the surviving provenance on the reverse. The original wooden backing retains a charming red-bordered handwritten gift label reading. From Dad, 25th Wedding Anniversary, April 5, 1927. Additional faded period labels or inventory markings remain above it. This remarkable inscription provides a tangible connection to the portrait’s history and establishes its presence within a family collection nearly a century ago. Christ is shown in quiet prayer against a dramatic, shadowed landscape and turbulent sky, creating a striking contrast with the gentle luminosity of the Christ Child portrait. Each image is housed in its own substantial period frame. Their differences in scale and framing give the pair the wonderfully collected-over-time appearance so desirable in antique interiors, while their shared religious subject matter creates a natural visual dialogue when displayed together. An exceptional pairing for a traditional or European-inspired interior, private chapel or prayer space, ecclesiastical collection, antique gallery wall, or collector of early American devotional art. Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. Height: 22.5 in. Width: 18.5 in. Depth: 0.5 in. Height: 16 in. Width: 12.5 in. Depth: 1 in. Very Good Antique Condition. Both devotional prints remain beautifully preserved for their age, retaining rich coloration and strong visual presence with relatively minimal fading. These imperfections contribute to the authentic antique character of the pieces rather than detracting from their presentation. The reverse of the Christ Child portrait is especially compelling, retaining its period wooden backing as well as the original handwritten April 5, 1927, 25th wedding anniversary gift label and additional aged labels or markings. The frames and reverse have intentionally been left with their naturally acquired patina, preserving the historical integrity and character of the pair. Period: Early 20th Century / Circa 1920s. Type: Religious / Devotional Art. Subjects: Christ Child; Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Style: Traditional, Ecclesiastical, Antique Americana. Medium: Period devotional prints in antique frames. Notable Feature: Christ Child portrait retains dated 1927 handwritten family provenance.
