Another item from my private collection of Santos Figures is this Asian style religious figure. I bought this from an antique dealer 20 years ago. Overall the piece is in very good condition for an item its age. It is has a nice patina to it, the finish varies all over from original paint to natural woo. Original gold chrome paint is still visible in many areas on the front side. There is a circular hole in the backside was designed for a finger when holding the unit. Side carvings still have much of its original red paint. The piece is made from a single piece of wood and has a lot of nice detail to it. Dimensions: 11-1/4″h x 4″d x 5w. SHAMAN SHIVA CEREMONIAL WOOD EXORCISM FESTIVAL DANCE MASK. Type of Object : MASK. Country of Origin : NEPAL. Materials : WOOD, natural pigment. Approximate Age: 30+ years. Dimensions : 9.0″ by 5.5″ by 4.0. Weight : 216 grams; 0.48 lbs; 7.6 oz. Overall Condition : Used, eroded statue. This is a Shaman exorcism mask, hand-carved by a Tharu Shaman. The Tharu people inhabit the Terai region of Nepal and some areas of Tibet as Well. Shamanic masks like this are used in religious rituals, festivals and exorcisms by shamans and sometimes by monks. Nepalese and Tibetan Masks are one of the symbols that better represent the culture and traditions of people living in the Himalayan region. The ritual of wearing masks is very old and it comes from animists. Himalayan tribes used to worship spirits of nature and guardians of these majestic mountains. The Shamans of these tribes used to wear masks during rituals they use to perform in order to protect the village, heal diseases, practice exorcisms or other purposes. Masks supposedly had a very important functions in the social life of these community as they were used also during theatrical representations and ceremonies dedicated to ancestors. Hindu and Buddhist cultures that became dominant in the surrounding regions, slowly replaced the myths of this shamanic cult. However some of the old costumes survived. Even spirits and demons were adopted by the Buddhist tradition and some of them became wrathful protectors of the Buddhist doctrine. These are objects acquired from more than 3 0 years of collecting both in the field and in New York. It has culminated in the creation of Ethnix Tribal Arts gallery on Broadway, New York City.
