Raphael, Da Vinci, Pierre Mignard, Madonna & Child Jesus, Renaissance Old Master 18thC Antique Oil Painting. An extremely fine and exquisitely painted oil on metal (tin) panel depicting the Holy Virgin and Child Jesus. A superb evocation of Pierre Mignard’s”Madonna of the Grapes”. Painted as a circle with gorgeous corner panels of interlocking grid lines, beautifully executed, clearly by a skilled hand. Early 18th century, probably Italian (possibly French), in very good condition, having this year been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. The image dimensions are approximately: 13 1/2” x 13 1/2” (34cm x 34cm) and the frame external dimensions are: 20 1/2” x 20 1/2” (52cm x 52cm). Antique engraving on laid paper of the mosaic by Raphael in the Chigi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome by master engraver Nicholas Dorigny (1658 – 1746). Signed in the plate. 8 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches. Approximately 18 x 19 inches. This piece has been professionally matted and framed using all new materials. This is not a modern print. This impression is more than 320 years old. The strike is crisp and the lines are sharp. The Creation of the World is a mosaic composition in the dome of the Chigi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome, designed by Raphael. The chapel itself was designed by Raphael for his friend and patron, banker Agostino Chigi as a private chapel and family burial place. It is the only religious building of Raphael which has been preserved in its near original form. The chapel is a treasure trove of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art and is considered among the most important monuments in the basilica. The dome was decorated with mosaics, a somewhat unusual and old-fashioned technique in the 16th century. Raphael’s designs were executed by a Venetian craftsman, Luigi da Pace in 1516. The designs of the panels are a hybrid of the “gods” and the planets, along with the zodiac and are something you might expect to find in a Pagan temple rather than a catholic chapel. The panels consist of the sky; Mercury, the god holding the caduceus (with Virgo and Gemini); Luna, the crescent moon jeweled goddess holding a bow (with Cancer); Saturn, the bearded god holding the scythe (with Aquarius and Capricorn); Jupiter, the king of the gods with his eagle holding a thunderbolt (with Sagittarius and Pisces); Mars, the god of war holding a sword and a shield (with Scorpio and Aries); Sol, the sun jeweled god holding a bow (with Leo); Venus, the goddess of love with Cupid holding a torch (with Taurus and Libra). The original designs were lost but some preparatory drawings, that confirm the originality of the work, survived in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Nicolas Dorigny was commissioned by Louis, the Duke of Burgundy in 1695 to created a series of plates depicting the mosaics forever memorializing Raphael’s designs for the Chapel. After Raphael Religious Antique Oil Painting Madonna, Child and Infant St John. A beautifully painted late 18th Century oil on canvas painting entitled “Madonna of the Goldfinch”. The “Madonna del cardellino” or “Madonna of the Goldfinch” is a painting by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael, from c. During the restoration, an antique copy replaced the painting in the gallery. In this painting, as in most of the Madonnas of his Florentine period, Raphael arranged the three figures – Mary, Christ and the young John the Baptist – to fit into a geometrical design. Though the positions of the three bodies are natural, together they form an almost regular triangle. The Madonna is shown young and beautiful, as with Raphaels various other Madonnas. She is also clothed in red and blue, also typical, for red signifies the passion of Christ and blue was used to signify the church. Christ and John are still very young, only babies. John holds a goldfinch in his hand, and Christ is reaching out to touch it. The background is one typical of Raphael. The natural setting is diverse and yet all calmly frames the central subject taking place. In Madonna Del Cardellino, the goldfinch represents Christs crucifixion. The reason for its association comes from the legend that its red spot was born at the time of the crucifixion. It flew down over the head of Christ and was taking a thorn from His crown, when it was splashed with the drop of His blood. The book in Marys hand reads Sedes Sapientiae or The Throne of Wisdom. This term usually is applied to images in which Mary is seated upon a throne, with Jesus on her lap, but in this case, the inscription implies the rock on which Mary sits is her natural throne. Some other examples are included at the end of the photos. Frame: Presented in a gorgeous carved gilt wooden frame. Provenance: UK Private collection. Condition: Painting and frame are both in good condition. There is some craquelure commensurate with age and the back of the canvas has a some stage been waxed. Measurements: Painting measures 36 x 27cm and the overall frames 53 x 44cm. Biography: Raphael is considered to be a master of the High Renaissance, a title he shares with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in 1483 and died in 1520, living a mere thirty-seven years. Despite his relatively short lifespan, he was highly influential throughout his time on earth. He produced a vast quantity of work in a variety of media. He was active in architecture, printmaking, painting, and drawing. During the first half of his career, he spent years traveling across Northern Italy and was influenced by the Florentine styles he saw there, causing this stage to be called his Florentine Period. After which, in 1508, he moved to Rome where he continued to work. Many of his commissions came from the Vatican, including the Apostolic Palace, which brought about one of his most famous works, School of Athens. Due to his relationship with the church, he and Michelangelo were fierce rivals throughout both of their careers, and often competed for the same commissions. During his Florentine period, this work, The Madonna Del Cardellino, was painted during this period, along with several other well-known Madonnas: The Madonna of the Meadow and La Belle Jardinière. All three share several characteristics: Madonna is clothed in red and blue, the same three subjects are painted, the pyramidal composition, the natural background, and the connection to the church through the representation of books, crosses, or, indeed, the goldfinch.
