“Saint Cecilia, Patroness of Musicians”. Museum quality 19th century French painting on canvas depicting this beautiful representation of Saint Cecilia. (Cecilia also spelled Cecily). Virgin and martyr, is the second most popular Catholic saint and the patroness of music. Legend has it that while she was being wed, she heard beautiful music coming from heaven. For this reason, she is usually depicted in a state of delicacy and ecstasy as if hearing celestial music. Her feast day is celebrated on November 22nd. The first record of a music festival in her honor was held at Évreux in Normandy in 1570. Cecilia was buried in the catacomb of St. At the beginning of the 9th century, Pope Paschal I discovered her incorrupt relics in the catacomb of St. Praetextatus and had them moved to Rome, to a basilica in Trastevere that now bears her name.
