ENTIRE COLLECTION OF SAMPLERS – MUST SELL!! I have been collecting beautiful ANTIQUE AMERICAN SCHOOLGIRL SAMPLERS for over 20 years. Please see my other listings for several samplers that need a new home. This listing is for an Adam & Eve sampler by Ann Davies dated 1822. This sampler has a tremendous amount of detail including multiple motifs of deer, dogs and other animals. Of course, the center motif is Adam & Eve on either side of the Snake wrapped around the tree. Ann has stitched a very detailed border and has included the upper case alphabet and numbers along the top of the sampler. Below the motifs Ann stitched the following verse. I ask not wealth nor pomp nor power. Not the vain pleasures of an hour. My soul aspires to nobler things. Than all the pride and state of kings. One thing I ask and wilt thou hear. And grant my soul a gift so dear. Wisdom descending from above. The choicest token of thy love. Wisdom betimes to know the Lord. To fear his name and keep his word. To lead my feet in paths of truth. And guide and guard my wandring youth. Additional motifs appear below the verse and the sampler is stitched. “Ann Davies – Her work in the Year 1822″. There are several holes with a little bit of thread loss and some staining in the upper left corner. The frame is very old and may be the original frame. The framed sampler measures 18-1/4″ tall x 14-1/4″ wide and is ready for hanging. This is a beautiful sampler despite its imperfections. Please look at the photos for up-close details.
