A magnificent and rare original watercolour of a Gothic altarpiece with Jesus Christ and numerous angels and attendants above two rows of saints/ religious personages. In an arched frame under glass with a canvas backing for support, the whole item measuring 23 x 15 inches. The outer frame is distressed with gilding and much gesso missing – the inner frame looks to be hand constructed (not certain) and may be earlier than the outer one. The artwork has toned with age but the halos and highlights are in gold. There is one small area (1cm round) midway up second pillar from the left where paper has split but this is very easily addressed. (Please ignore any camera glare especially in close-up of single figure where white oblong is flash reflection). Most certainly of at least 19th Century origin (probably mid century or earlier) but may be older. Very rare and wonderfully executed and highly decorative with superb detail (over 20 figures) and probably continental in origin.
