FINE ANTIQUE 18thC OLD MASTER BAROQUE CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY RELIGIOUS OIL PAINTING. RARE ANTIQUE CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY / RELIGIOUS OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS Measures 9.25″ x 7.5″ Unframed Probably dates from the early 18th century, possibly earlier. It came from a country house in south eastern France, but may possibly be Spanish or Italian, I’m not sure. It depicts a prostrate semi-clad maiden being held and comforted, with another classical maiden in the background under an arched raindbow reaching out to what appears to be a horse. I think the subject matter is probably from classical mythology rather than religious, but I stand to be corrected. It is all in very tidy condition, with no damages ; I think it may have been re-lined in the past and certainly re-varnished. Please refer to the photographs.
