Rare Antique Spanish Colonial Caravaca Bronze Religious Catholic Reliquary Cross. DESCRIPTION: This listing is for a wonderful and rare antique 19th century Caravaca reliquary cross pendant. This incredible reliquary cross represents the original Miraculous Cross that was deposited by Angels within the Church of Caravaca de la Cruz, in 1231, and made converts to Christianity of the Moor King and his Family that were in the Church at the time. Eventually, the town and church with relics passed to the Knights Templar who, in the 15th century, built the castle that still dominates the town today. This cross is typical of those worn by pilgrims in the 19th century, and a similar cross may be seen today in the Museum of Caravaca de la Cruz. In 1998 Caravaca de la Cruz became the fifth holy town (along with Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, Rome and Jerusalem) celebrating the Perpetual Jubilee in the Vera Cruz Sanctuary (Sanctuario de la Vera Cruz) where the Caravaca Cross is kept. The cross is finely made of cast bronze, and features intricate detailing, with lovely patina. It will make an outstanding addition to any collection! CONDITION: The cross presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear and patina commensurate with age. There is minor tarnish/oxidation. Please review all photos. This antique polychrome religious statue depicts the Blessed Virgin holding Jesus. Handmade from wood, this statue is beautifully crafted. Unfortunately the polychrome is beginning to delaminate from the wood due to its age. Please see all of the pictures for details. The intricate work and vibrant colors make it a unique and collectible piece for those interested in religious artifacts. With the exception of the hand, it appears to be carved from one block of wood, possibly teak due its significant weight of 15.2 lbs. It measures 24 inches tall and the base is 6.5 inches deep and 7.5 inches wide. Mary is standing on a crescent moon perhaps depicting her ascension into heaven. The plaits of her hair is very unique and different. The baby Jesus holds the world in his hand while blessing the viewer. Please inquire with any questions.
