This is a magnificent and rare Ethiopian Orthodox Processional Hand Cross, a significant piece of liturgical art used by priests during ceremonies and blessings. Hand-cast using the ancient “lost wax” technique, this cross features a unique spherical central element. While one side features a functional hinged enclosure that opens to reveal a hand-etched icon of two holy figures, please note that the opposite side’s cylinder is decorative and does not open. The craftsmanship is exceptionally detailed, featuring. Central Icon: A hidden internal engraving of religious figures within the functional hinged side. Figurative Elements: Depictions of winged angels and saints integrated into the cross arms. Symbolic Base: The bottom “taboot” base features an etched open book with Ge’ez script (the liturgical language of Ethiopia) and a winged seraph on the reverse side. The cross is made of a sturdy brass or bronze alloy with a heavy silvered wash, showing a beautiful authentic patina that speaks to its age and ritual use. Item Specifics & Measurements. Condition: Antique condition with visible wear to the silver plating. One side of the central sphere is fixed (does not open) by design. The functional hinge remains in good working order. I bought it from a dealer who sells other antiques and assured me it is was.
