This is a Magnificent and profound Antique Mid Century Modern Abstract Cubist Oil Painting on Masonite board, depicting an Expressionist interpretation of The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A cubist and abstracted Christ is depicted on the cross, with an anguished expression on his face. He is depicted with nails in his hands and feet, with the Spear of Longinus piercing his side. Another cross can be seen in the background behind him, and a cubistic skull lays beside him. This painting is Gargantuan! Over 6 feet tall! This painting is approximately 48 1/4 x 72 inches including frame. This painting is signed: “Newberry 53″ toward the lower center edge. I could not find much information on a painter named Newberry, but perhaps you recognize the artist? Some areas of scuffing, scratching, minor paint loss and light craquelure from 60+ years of age and storage.
