Cornelis Van Poelenburg, Dutch Old Master,’Apollo & Coronis’, 1600’s Antique Oil Painting. A very interesting, fresh to the market original oil on chamfered panel attributed to Cornelis van Poelenburg. Originally thought to depict the Roman goddess Diana & Endymion however research and expert opinion suggests a much more plausible depiction of Apollo and Coronis. The story, after Ovide, tells of the love affair between Apollo & Coronis, she becoming pregnant, then sleeping with Ischys , son of Elatus. A white crow informs Apollo of the affair and he kills Coronis with his own arrow, immediately regretting his action and to punish the crow, he turns it black. He then tries desperately to heal Coronis but she is already dead. With early paper label verso. With the hint of an indistinct monogram lower right. Condition is good commensurate with age, having been recently cleaned and re-varnished. Overall in good, restored condition. Housed in a contemporary gilt frame. The image dimensions are approximately: 18” x 15” (46cm x 37.5cm). F rom a private family collection in Germany. Cornelis van Poelenburg was a student of Bloemaert and visited Italy, Poelenburg now being considered the founder of Dutch landscape painting with Italian characteristics. He specialised in smaller landscapes from the area around Rome with naked figures from ancient mythology and with Biblical scenes. As usual, open to sensible offers for this important artwork. An unusual solid sterling silver snuff box. It is hallmarked with the import marks for Sheffield 1894 with the sponsors mark being SBL for Samuel Boyce (or Boaz) Landeck. It is also marked with Dutch marks and German Hanau marks. It has been unusually designed with the base being in the form of a shell and the lid embossed with a religious scene. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs. The hinge is strong, the inside clean, and the lid forms a good seal. It measures over 2.25 inches (6cms) across by 2 inches (5.1cms) wide by 1.25 inches (3.2cms) and weighs 42 grams. A nice quality well made piece.
