This antique 19th C miniature painting on porcelain depicts a Madonna & Child scene, framed in a double frame. The outer frame has burl veneer and an ebonized border. The inner frame is brass with tiny shells. The porcelain (3″x2 3/8″)is wrapped in a metal surround which I believe is also brass. The back of the frame is lined in old French newspaper or book page and the miniature is backed with leather. The artist created this original oil painting in the style of Raphael in France. Measuring 6 inches in height and 5.25 inches in width, (in the frame) this religious artwork captures the essence of biblical themes and portrait style. A unique addition to any art collection, this piece showcases the intricate detail and craftsmanship of the 19th century.

IT WAS FOUND IN THE ATTIC OF A NOW CLOSED NUNS CONVENT AND IS AN ORIGINAL PIECE BY THE ARTIST JOSEPH MALACHY KAVANAGH AND IS HAND PAINTED ON CANVAS AND FRAMED IN AN ELEGANT GOLD FINISHED WOOD FRAME THAT IS 21 3/4 INCHES TALL BY 18 3/4 INCHES WIDE AND 3 INCHES DEEP. IT IS SIGNED BY JOSEPH MALACHY KAVANAGH WHO WAS A FAMOUS IRISH PAINTER WHO WAS BORN IN DUBLIN, IRELAND IN 1856 AND DIED IN DUBLIN APRIL 2, 1918. IT HAS ATTACHED A BRASS LAMP FOR ILLUMINATING THE ARTWORK THAT HAS OLD CLOTH WIRING THAT IS NOT SAFE TO TRY. THE LAMP COULD BE REMOVED IF DESIRED, THE DEPTH WITH THE LAMP ATTACHED IS 7 3/4 INCHES. Offering these two early antique wood a Adirondack style frame antique religious print depicting a scene often associated with the Baptism of Christ, set in a rustic, likely 19th-century, primitive frame. This is a superb antique mixed media artwork of “Our Lady of Sorrows”. I do not see a signature anywhere on the artwork and it is. Housed in a tiered gold and brown frame protected behind glass. The dimensions are: Frame: 16.0 inches wide, 17.5 inches tall and 1.5 inches deep. Image: 9.5 inches wide and 7.0 inches tall.
