RARE AND VERY COLLECTIBLE ca. 1820 Georgian 9 k yellow gold mourning pin brooch with seed pearls. Please read the product parameters carefully and choose the jewelry that suits you to avoid unnecessary trouble. I have 2 very similar mourning brooches listed. This one is rectangular the other one is oval. Both from the same estate and both belonged to the same woman see my other listings and the last picture. Georgian era: 1820s pin brooch – which could easily be converted into a pendant by a competent jeweler (I currently do not offer this service). Rare find: 200+ year old pins in this condition are rare to find. Mourning jewelry: braided hair under glass. Hairwork or jewelry made of human hair has appeared throughout the history of craft work, particularly those made to be used for private worship and mourning. From the Middle Ages through the early twentieth century, memorial hair jewelry remained common. Hair, considered to be a remnant off the person it was cut from, also has often played a part in myths and legends. Very nicely surrounded by seed pearls. A seed pearl is a small natural pearl formed in either saltwater oyster or freshwater mussel that is usually less than 2 millimeters in diameter. Victorian England small seed pearls were often used in mourning jewelry. Back is plain gold – check. Pin is in good condition. Glass has small dust specs inside. Again this is a 200+ year old item. Wear is commensurate with age. Pin itself is not gold (most of the pins attached to the brooches are not gold). No repairs, no issues, glass is intact. Pin is a bit warped (again very normal when worn again this is an antique item). Huge – check ALL the measurements. This is a 200 year old antique pin – let’s put this into perspective. People had horses not cars in the 1800s. James Monroe was US President. People had no indoor plumbing. In 1820 the life expectancy in the US was 44.9 years (females) – for men even less (38). (perfectly normal for an antique item of this age) but tested by me. 9K gold is NOT as saturated as 14 or 18k gold. Pin itself is not gold (most of the pins attached to the brooches are not gold as gold is too soft of a metal). 2 centimeters long x 1.3 centimeters at its widest (or 0.79 inches x 0.51 inches). Use a measuring tape or a ruler so you can visualize the size properly. Compare the item to a pin you own FOR SCALE. More precise than this is IMPOSSIBLE. Compare the weight to an item you own. Read the product parameters carefully and choose the jewelry that suits you to avoid unnecessary trouble. Weight and measurements are approximate and taken to the best of my abilities. An exquisite exceedingly rare French Empire miniature Holy Bible ring circa 1810 made by hand from solid 18K gold, decorated with exquisite painted enamel work that the French were famous for and set with hand painted porcelain plaquettes inscribed with verses from the French La Sainte Bible of 1805. This piece was likely a wedding gift. Indeed, many of these verses remain popular readings at weddings today. The cover itself secures perfectly with a latch clasp made from solid 18K gold. The cover depicts Moses and the Ten Commandments. Aside from the hinged opening cover there are two separate pages which can be turned inside the ring. The inside cover, titled La Femme Vertueuse, is from Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 26:1-4. The next five pages, titled Portrait De La Femme Forte are from Proverbs 31:10-31. The verses are wise, practical and quite lovely. Some praise the qualities and great worth of any woman of virtuous strong and noble character… “For she is worth far more than rubies” and “she is strong and respected and not afraid of the future”. Other verses serve to remind their husbands just how lucky they are! ” the husband of a good woman is a fortunate man, he will live twice as long” and ” whether rich or poor, he will always be happy and smiling”. Or remind husbands to acknowledge their wives… “Give her credit for all she does, she deserves the respect of everyone”. A Google search for Sirach 26:1-4 and Proverbs 31:10-31 should provide any number of translations. This is a ring of great beauty and depth. We have never seen another like it. This piece is in very good condition for its 200 or so years of age. On the second page beneath the cover there is some loss to the porcelain text on the front and back at the top which can be seen in the photographs. There is minor wear to the enamel on the side of the ring and on the underside of the ring as you would expect for an piece such as this which has been adored. The miniature gold Bible measures 13/16″ long by 11/16″ wide by 3/16 deep (21mm x 17mm x 5mm). These measurement are for the book and don’t include the band. The whole piece weighs 11.3 grams. Currently the ring is a size 6 US. It could be resized up or down but we would recommend that resizing be done by an experienced jeweler equipped with a laser welder. The heat from a conventional jewelers torch can easily damage antique enamel. The laser confines any heat to just the area of the shank where it is being resized. I just love this ring, for some reason when I look at it I imagine a woman who is getting married being given this piece as a guide to her and to her husband in their married life ahead. This rarest of pieces comes with a full appraisal. The piece appraised by a professional Gemologist and accredited Jewelry Appraiser who is a specialist in the field. This exceedingly attractive 18th century collage picture of Saint Anne is of European origin, most likely French. This’dressed print’ decorative art form was very popular during the first half of the 18th century. Known as Adorned or Dressed Prints, ancient engravings would be cut away using a very sharp knife tool leaving just a face or thin outer frame (a little like the lead work frame on stained glass window). Ornate velvet, silk and luxury gold and silver fabrics, colored paper and sometimes foil would then be inserted from behind. The engraved facial features would then be hand-painted and sometimes spangles and unusually in this case, straw work ornamentation applied as a floral border decoration. The embossed straw work border on our example is very rare. The bird’s-eye Maple veneered frame is a later 19th century addition but with its old wavy glass, we think that you will agree that it is very pleasing. Measuring: Frame width 6.75 inch (17 cm) by height 7.75 inch (19.5 cm). Frame depth 1 inch (2.5 cm). Aperture width 4 inch (10 cm) by height 5 inch (12.5 cm). Condition is very good considering its nearly 300 years. As mentioned the ancient woven silk fabrics have faded a little. The coated paper/ vellum ground again would probably been much brighter (probably blue), this has faded and appears as a soft grey. There are some minor losses to the straw work flowers. Highly desirable and very rare antique silk needlepoint. Increasingly hard to find, particularly large examples in such good condition. Hand coloured (gouache) detailing and all hand stitched. A typical religious scene popular in the late 18th early 19th. Of Flemish origins and entitled “joseph reconnu par son pere” (Joseph recognised by his father).
