In the Kykkos Monastery of Cyprus there is the well-known icon of Panagia Eleousa (of Kykkos), which presents the Virgin Mary on the right side. The legend of the icon of Panagia Kykkos is dramatic. The image is reputed and respected throughout the Orthodox World. It is one of the four icons of the Virgin Mary attributed to the Apostle Luke. The Panagia of Kykkos, painted by Apostle Luke just seven years after the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, was transferred by the Apostle himself to Egypt after the Death of the Virgin Mary. The image remained there until the Christians, of whom they were guarded, were captured by the pirates. To save her from desecration, they threw her into the sea. Two Byzantine boats appeared, and after they chased away the pirates, they rescued the image. Emperor Alexios sent Duke Manuel Voutomytis, in Cyprus as governor. One day, when he was hunted by the mountains, he lost his friends and stayed alone. Where he sought to find his comrades, he suddenly found a cave in which an ascetic lived, the monk Isaiah. The governor asked the monk if he had seen his friends go from there. Isaiah did not give any answer, he got very angry and as a result he beat the old man and left. Within days, the duke was”hit”by an incurable disease, a kind of paralysis, called salialgia. Then followed a series of dreams. First, Governor Voutomytis, saw God in a dream of telling him that he would be cured if he begged the ascetic monk to forgive him, and when Boutomoustis complied with these counseling, he was cured. Meanwhile, the monk Isaiah himself dreamt that the Virgin Mary appeared to him and told him that he and Voutomytis must go to Constantinople and bring her image to Cyprus. When they arrived in Constantinople, they found that the Emperor was reluctant to give the icon to them. The emperor’s daughter suddenly suffered the same illness as the governor had before. With a heavy form of saliva. So the ICON OF THE VIRGIN MARY CAME TO CYPRUS and ALL THE TREES WERE KNEELING DOWN TO WELCOME HER.

This is a one-of-a-kind religious artifact believed to have been gifted to Benedictine monks in Latin America between the late 18th and early 19th century. Constructed from a single black tourmaline (shorl) crystal, the piece features intricate silver filigree work, gold inlays, and a vibrant opal specimen. The reliquary is crowned with a rare 1774 “Carolus III Dei Gratia” one Real silver coin from the Bolivia Potosí mint, mounted above a hidden votive compartment. This hinged space may have held a religious item or snuff, common for its time. It will be hard to find this book in this beautiful rare condition. This book is solid!! Very tight and strongly held together for its age! Leather is strong and great condition! Spine is solid and intact at all corners. Inside of front and back cover fully attached. The front brown paper inside cover page is missing but the book is perfectly attached to the cover. It was not ripped or torn out. It is like it was cut or just never there. It does not affect the condition of the book or hurt it in anyway. Gold gild on outside is in beautiful condition. On the bottom there is one small 1 inch by less than half inch very lightly faded spot on the bottom gilding on the book. I show in a photo. It’s barely faded and is still golden to sight. You have to turn it in the light to see the small faded spot. Illustrations pages are perfect with tissue guards intact on 10 of the 12. Pages are all very tight. No rips tears or folds. Only normal but very little foxing. Outside leather is in excellent condition with normal wear for its age showing at top and bottom. There are a couple dark stains on the spine. It is very dark like ink possibly and could make a good story of where it came from. Lol Please ask any questions or if you need more photos. It’s a gorgeous book! Please check out my other books!
