Height: 7.67 inches / 19.5 centimeters. Width: 4.72 inches / 12 centimeters. Depth: 1.96 inches / 5 centimeters. Item condition: Good condition with minor flaws, consistent with age and use. Missing 2 fingers, 1 from the right hand and 1 from the left. Minor flaws on polychrome and sculpture. See photos for complete assessment. The hands have the actual dimensions of a female human. The Santos dolls take their name from the Spanish word for Saint, and are also known as Santons (French) and Santibelli (Italian). The Santos that started the genre of dolls we currently represent (primarily Spanish Colonial and Western European style), were originally started as copies of 17th century carvings by priests. Originally, Santos were created for use as in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war. Their development flourished in Europe in the 1700’s and 1800’s, primarily due to these wars. Santos dolls are closely related to the Crèche figures, which were implemented in Italy by St Francis of Assisi, during the 13th century. However, the Crèche are primarily associated with Italian and French nativity and crib scenes. Crèche scenes are still elaborately displayed throughout Italy and in parts of France, most notably in Provence. Wonderful pair of antique circa late 19th century hand-carved wooden Santos hands with original paint. Spanish in origin, these lovely sculptural religious artefacts are remnants that would have originally been part of a full figure. Each hand is mounted onto a simple metal stand. Height overall – from bottom of stand to tip of finger: 34 cm. Height – not including stand: 24 cm. Width (fingerspan): 9.5 cm. Depth (front to back) of angled hand: 8 cm. Stand base: 9 cm x 9 cm. Some losses and old repairs, ageing and wear. Please refer to photos detailing the condition. This product is a vintage item and will show some signs of cosmetic wear/patina. This last name features bese from Catalonia, Spain. It might made in Barcelona or Olot. Had a lot of old workshop of religious art. Olot, Catalonia began in 1880 and produced exquisite and unequaled religious Imagery for the churches out Europe. The total height from top of the halo to bottom of the pedestal.
