I have another listing with a similar page from the same book. Offered here is an authentic antique illuminated manuscript leaf from a large ecclesiastical choir book or antiphonal. This substantial double-sided leaf is handwritten on vellum or parchment and features Latin liturgical text, square-note Gregorian chant notation on red four-line staves, rubricated details, decorative initials, and an elaborate architectural illumination rendered in rich shades of blue, green, red, and sepia. The manuscript is numbered CXCIII on one side and CXCIV on the reverse, indicating consecutive pages 193 and 194 from the original choir book. Large-format antiphonals of this type were traditionally placed on a lectern so that several singers could read the music together during religious services. Based on the script, musical notation, Roman-numeral foliation, and decorative style, the leaf is believed to date from the late 16th to early 17th century, approximately 1575 to 1625. It is likely Southern European and may be Spanish or Italian. The exact date, geographic origin, and attribution have not been independently authenticated. The architectural illumination is especially striking, featuring columns, towers, domed forms, floral ornament, and vivid blue architectural details. The manuscript measures approximately 21.5 inches by 15 inches. Condition is consistent with considerable age and handmade construction. There is discoloration, waviness, staining, edge wear, surface marks, possible pinholes, small losses, and irregularities throughout. These characteristics are visible in the photographs and form part of the manuscript’s historic character. This impressive double-sided leaf is handwritten on vellum or parchment and features liturgical Latin, square-note Gregorian chant notation on red four-line staves, rubrication, decorative painted initials, and a large illuminated initial rendered in green, blue, red, white, and sepia tones. Apostolorum Petri et Pauli. This identifies the manuscript as part of the liturgy for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The principal chant begins. “Nunc scio vere quia misit Dominus angelum suum”. This translates approximately as. Now I know truly that the Lord has sent his angel. The text concerns Saint Peter’s miraculous deliverance from the hand of Herod and is associated with the liturgy honoring Saints Peter and Paul. The reverse contains further Gregorian chant, several decorative initials, and the Latin phrase. “Domine probasti me et cognovisti me”. O Lord, you have examined me and known me. Both sides bear the Roman numeral LXXVII, representing page 77 of the original choir book. Large-format antiphonals were traditionally placed on a lectern so that multiple singers could read the notation together during religious services. The leaf measures approximately 21.5 inches by 15 inches. Based on its script, notation, pigments, foliation, and decorative style, the manuscript is believed to date from approximately the late 16th to early 17th century and is likely Southern European. The precise date, country of origin, and attribution have not been independently authenticated. Condition is consistent with considerable age and handmade construction. There is age-related discoloration, waviness, staining, surface wear, edge wear, small marks, and natural variation in the vellum. A pale circular area and other irregularities are visible near the lower left portion of the leaf. Please examine all photographs carefully. Illuminated Manuscript Leaf from a Book of Hours, on vellum. Northern France or Flanders, second half of the fifteenth century c. Single leaf, 6 ¾ x 4 7/8 inches, written in a fine Gothic bookhand in brown ink. Decorated with one larger illuminated initial and several smaller illuminated initials in blue, red, and burnished gold, accompanied throughout by illuminated bar line-fillers of alternating blue and burgundy compartments ornamented with white foliate scrollwork and raised gold bezants; with an elegant floral and acanthus border in colours and gold extending the height of the text block. Text in Latin with red rubrication and illuminated line-fillers. A charming and decorative example of the mature Franco-Flemish Book of Hours tradition, displaying the refined floral ornament and vibrant palette characteristic of manuscript production in Northern Europe during the final decades of the fifteenth century.
