Used for worship by devotees. A highly emotive artefact to be hung on a wall, or displayed on a stand. A l arger example of the genre. Thangkas are religious icons used by devotees to decorate a prayer or meditation room wall, often in a Monastery. Although they frequently take the form of a silk scroll mounted on silk brocade frames, they are also painted on both paper and wood. Increasingly here in the West, they are employed to bring serenity to an otherwise frenetic pace of life. Their subject matter takes three forms: The different mudras of Buddha, as here, different gods and goddesses, and finally different Mandalas. This beautiful artefact is painted on wood and depicts an Aparmita or Amitayas Buddha. He is painted red to bestow long life upon devotees. His hands are in dhyana mudra meditation pose, holding a vase, or kalash. His robe is heavily ornamented, his hair worn in Ushnisha, or Buddha’s crown style. Nothing older than 100 years is allowed to leave Nepal. This example dates back to the second half of the 20th c. Perhaps the 1960s, and carries a Govt. It weighs 2.4 pounds and measures 5 and 3/4″ wide by 9 and 1/2″ tall by 2 and 1/2 deep. There is some minor wear present including some small chips to the wood. I have shown this in my photographs. A wonderful antique carved wooden figure p. Robably originally part of a freeze or larger sculptural piece. The figure has been carved in a rather acrobatic or flying pose and looks like it was originally holding something, as we can see two aligned holes in the hands. There are three old metal rings attached – one in the top of the head and two in the back, one can only wonder at what exactly these were for, but currently they have been wired up with a rather unattractive nylon line to allow hanging. The paint has worn off over time but there are still traces here and there. Particularly head and underneath on the clothing. It’s carved from a dense, hard wood of some type, fairly heavy overall. Difficult to date exactly but definitely has some age – mid 19th century India by repute. Very good overall condition; there’s an old repair to one arm, but no other significant damage. Obvious signs of age and paint loss. Measures; 19 inches / 48 cm long x 8 inches / 20 cm widest point. From tip of fingers to top of head 11 inches / 28cm.
