Lionel Reiss was the director of the art department at MGM studios in Los Angeles and New York for 30 years. He was the creator of the lion roaring logo at the beginning and end of MGM movies. He is a highly collectible Jewish American artist. In his many Jewish artbooks, he chronicles the life and history of the Jewish people and Israel. This is a rare example of art done in Israel during one of his frequent trips. Painted in 1952, it shows Eilat, the southern most tip of Israel at the Gulf of Acaba with very little civilization. Today, Eilat is a frequently visited tourist fishing town famous for it’s resorts. It measures 19 1/2″ X 15 1/2″ with the frame. The picture itself measures 9″ X 13″. This is a lovely example of a Carved Mother Of Pearl Bethlehem The Last Supper Shadow Box icon. A hand carved mother of pearl “icon” from the early to mid Twentieth Century, skillfully carved and assembled by Christians in the Old Holy Land. This shell work was done by Eastern Orthodox Christians in Jerusalem and Bethlehem called “Melchites” backdrop. These icons were made for pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land to bring back from the Grand Tour, from the early 1830’s right through to the mid Twentieth Century. The icon measures approx 9 inches high, 8 inches wide and 1 & 3/4 inches deep. There is a small piece missing on the top left corner also there has been a repair on the top centre which has been shown in the images having said that I beleive it to be in good overall condition considering it’s age.
