Item Measurements: The pendant measures 1.77″ long by 0.35″ wide. Pendant Type: Drop/Dangle Pendant. This gorgeous pendant was made in a hollow, elongated rectangular shape. There are two applied symbols adorning the front of the pendant. These symbols are the Star of David as well as the Chai symbol. Both of these symbols are significant in the Jewish religion, and are a lovely touch to the item. This item would have been made using the repousse technique. The repousse technique dates back as far as the 3rd century BC and involves hand hammering precious metals into beautiful and intricate patterns. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The sterling silver is slightly tarnished, which is to be expected of an item this age. The silver is ever so slightly dented in some areas, which is to be expected of a hollow item of this age. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure. Lionel Reiss was the director of the art department at MGM studios in Los Angeles and New York for 30 years. He was the creator of the lion roaring logo at the beginning and end of MGM movies. He is a highly collectible Jewish American artist. In his many Jewish artbooks, he chronicles the life and history of the Jewish people and Israel. This is a rare example of art done in Israel during one of his frequent trips. Painted in 1952, it shows Eilat, the southern most tip of Israel at the Gulf of Acaba with very little civilization. Today, Eilat is a frequently visited tourist fishing town famous for it’s resorts. It measures 19 1/2″ X 15 1/2″ with the frame. The picture itself measures 9″ X 13″.
