18th Century Santos Mannequin 3' 8 Articulated Doll Religious Saint Museum Qual
This is one of many great vintage & antique items I’m currently listing from various estates. Please take a look at my other merchandise at your leisure. Museum Quality 18th Century European Religious Santos / Mannequin. This religious figurine / mannequin has been in our family since the 1960s and was passed down from our grandmother. It dates to the 18th century and is in a beautiful state of preservation. She retains her original polychrome paint (the body wasn’t painted where she would have been clothed). Her glass eyes have brown irises. The articulated arms are jointed at shoulders and elbows and are easily posable. The head swivels slightly. The fully carved legs are stationary. Gilt sandals are part of the carved feet. She has nail holes in her head, as shown, from centuries of attaching wigs or headdress. Based on its large size, the Santos was likely commissioned for a church. My grandmother used to recount that the doll originally had old German handwritten documents sewn into her garments. These garments and documents have since been lost so its exact country / provenance is unknown. The undergarments shown are of muslin: the skirt has a drawstring sewn in at the waist. The fitted top has snap closures. She comes with an antique hand-sewn wig. She also comes with a cap and an antique velvet & lace garment (not shown here). The only damages to note are a chip on the back base of her neck (seen in 4th photo) and a split along joined sections of wood in her waist (seen in 7th photo) which does not affect her stability. There are also some chips along the back edges of her sandals. The stand, though not antique or original to the piece, is included. Only 12 photos are shown. This wood sculpture has been beautifully designed with so much attention to detail that it appears realistic, and it is possible to appreciate every detail of the body. This 18th Century Life-Size Joan of Arc Santos Cage Doll sculpture exudes high quality with a good patina from that time… It is absolutely gorgeous! She comes in 2 parts. The bust can be separated from her skirt. This is a real museum piece for the serious collector. Provenance: Given the testimony of the former owner, this Joan of Arc sculpture was an order from a French bourgeoisie. To a Spanish frontier workshop for a French private chapel in the 18th century. Item Condition: Good condition. Age weathered surfaces, some chips and flaws can be noted along the sculpture. Condition is appropriate for age and use. See photos for complete assessment. Height: 58.66 inches / 149 centimeters. Width: 25.59 inches / 65 centimeters. Depth: 16.53 inches / 42 centimeters. The Santos dolls take their name from the Spanish word for Saint, and are also known as Santons (French) and Santibelli (Italian). The Santos that started the genre of dolls we currently represent (primarily Spanish Colonial and Western European style), were originally started as copies of 17th century carvings by priests. Originally, Santos were created for use as in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war. Their development flourished in Europe in the 1700’s and 1800’s, primarily due to these wars. Santos dolls are closely related to the Crèche figures, which were implemented in Italy by St Francis of Assisi, during the 13th century. Item condition: Good condition with minor flaws, consistent with age and use. Minor flaws on polychrome and sculpture. See photos for complete assessment. These are very hard to find figures, they were usually ordered by the upper bourgeoisie that required them for their private chapels. She comes in 2 parts. The bust can be separated from her “skirt” sort of speech. The bust is attached with the under body by still the original iron hooks, this hook is also present on the left arm, that particular hook keeps the arm in a certain postion to hold baby Jesus. As you can see in the picture on this hand there is a wooden pin, this pin was there to secure that baby. The baby is not available anymore. Her face is so beautiful, she has a stunning expression with real glass eyes and pierced ears. This Santos Cage Doll comes from Italy and is still in really perfect condition considering this one is around 300 years old. Just a little chunk is missing on her hips.
