Rare Antique Arabic Islamic Manuscript – Tafsir Sciences – Al-Hilali Al-Sijilmassi. Antique Arabic Islamic Manuscript on Tafsir (Qur’anic Exegesis). An authentic handwritten Arabic Islamic manuscript dedicated to the science of Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), associated with the renowned Moroccan scholar Sheikh Ahmed ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Hilali Al-Sijilmassi Al-Filali (18th century / 12th century AH), one of the most distinguished scholars of the Alaouite era. Sheikh Al-Hilali was celebrated as an encyclopedic scholar whose expertise encompassed Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic grammar, linguistics, philosophy, logic, poetry, history, and other Islamic sciences. His scholarly legacy earned him widespread recognition among historians and biographers, and many of his works survive only in manuscript form. Illuminated Manuscript Leaf from a Book of Hours, on vellum. Northern France or Flanders, second half of the fifteenth century c. Single leaf, 6 ¾ x 4 7/8 inches, written in a fine Gothic bookhand in brown ink. Decorated with one larger illuminated initial and several smaller illuminated initials in blue, red, and burnished gold, accompanied throughout by illuminated bar line-fillers of alternating blue and burgundy compartments ornamented with white foliate scrollwork and raised gold bezants; with an elegant floral and acanthus border in colours and gold extending the height of the text block. Text in Latin with red rubrication and illuminated line-fillers. A charming and decorative example of the mature Franco-Flemish Book of Hours tradition, displaying the refined floral ornament and vibrant palette characteristic of manuscript production in Northern Europe during the final decades of the fifteenth century.

This is part of an Ashkenazi Torah scroll containing Genesis 49:33 through Exodus 4:9. It seems to have originated in central Europe and includes “tagin” or crowns. It is on Vellum and measures 9.75″ (inches) high by 12.75″ (inches) long. This was originally part of a complete Torah scroll. This manuscript contains five columns.
