A stunning and increasingly rare antique French Catholic Marian processional banner, dating to the early 1900s, featuring a beautifully hand-embroidered depiction of the Blessed Virgin Mary based on The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables by the Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. This remarkable devotional textile is an authentic ecclesiastical artifact that would make an outstanding addition to any collection of religious antiques or church history. Entirely handmade, the banner showcases intricate hand embroidery and hand stitching, reflecting the extraordinary craftsmanship of early 20th-century ecclesiastical artisans. Imported from France???? Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. As expected for an item that is well over 100 years old, the banner displays age-related wear and signs of use consistent with its original liturgical purpose. The reverse backing shows more significant wear, including damage caused by the supporting pole during years of use in religious processions. These authentic signs of age testify to its long devotional history and should be appreciated as part of its character rather than viewed as defects. The wooden hanging rod, copper finials, and suspension cord are NOT included in the sale. Religious processional banners have been used for centuries during Catholic processions, pilgrimages, and religious festivals known in Brittany as. Traditionally depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, or sacred inscriptions, these banners served both as devotional objects and as symbols of parish identity and unity. Most surviving examples date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when renewed religious devotion inspired churches to commission richly embroidered banners. Earlier examples are exceptionally scarce, with only a small number of pre-French Revolution banners surviving today. These banners were typically crafted from luxurious textiles such as velvet, silk, linen, or jute and embellished with elaborate embroidery using gold and silver thread. Decorative fringes, tassels, and wooden poles allowed them to remain visible and withstand outdoor processions. This example is a genuine period piece that embodies both the artistic excellence and religious heritage of its era. An exceptional opportunity to acquire an authentic antique Catholic processional banner with remarkable craftsmanship, historical significance, and undeniable presence. A wonderful collector’s piece that proudly bears the beautiful patina and honest wear earned through more than a century of devotional use.
