This is a stirring and thought-provoking Antique Vintage Mid Century Modern Surrealist Abstract Angel Mystery Painting, airbrush paint (acrylic or oil) on canvas. This work is very unique and unusual, it is created with an airbrush paint machine and stencils for the larger shapes, with hand applied oil or acrylic paint for the finer details. The brush strokes are barely visible, but they are present. In all of mt years of dealing in Mid Century artworks, I have acquired two pieces three pieces produced by this technique. It was very uncommon for the era and cutting edge in many ways. This work depicts a mysterious silhouette of the archangel Gabriel, with a stern facial expression and holding a large sword in his right hand. Gabriel’s head is surrounded by a corona of holy fire, and his body is patinated with the image of a mysterious floral pattern, possibly a reference to the garden of Eden. This work was acquired from an abandoned old multi-million-dollar estate in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. This work is unsigned, but perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? This painting approximately dates to the late 1950’s – 1960’s. Approximately: 25 3/4 x 35 1/8 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 19 1/4 x 28 1/2 inches. Good condition, with some very light scuffing and edge wear to the original period frame. Canvas has some light scuffs in the lower left corner please see photos. Any help identifying the hand that did this magnificent antique oil would be very much appreciated. We know nothing about this work other than it is obviously religious subject matter and it is very very very old. There is a very old canvas that the work is presumed to have been done on initially. It looks from the side that the old canvas was attached to a newer canvas. Presumably due to the fragile nature of the paint, the canvas was then mounted to board. We have tried to take pictures to help an educated eye appreciate the condition of the work. We can see that there have been paint repairs over the years, the oil has significant cracking and the varnish has yellowed. We showed this work to a collector friend and they told us they believe it is from c. 16th century, although he was not an expert and we certainly are not either. Please examine pictures closely yourself and draw your own conclusions. Please note that the colors and skin tones appears to us to be a bit more muted in person versus what shows in the pictures. This work will be perfect for 1 a preserver with the talent and means to bring it back to its glory (and likely make a fortune on it) or 2 someone that wants to wrap this beauty in an old gold frame, appreciate the imperfections as a true antique statement piece in that special room in their stately home. This is a very rare amazing find for the right person. We have not had this work appraised and we list it reluctantly.
