Beautifully embroidered religious collar or closed stole with a pelican (a symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice for humanity), crown of thorns, cross, leaves, flowers – the ouroboros, a snake swallowing its tail symbolizing death and rebirth – all rich in handiwork and meaning. Reverse features three crosses and the maker’s label. Year of creation is hard to guess at – perhaps the early 1900’s based on the quality and manner of embroidery. CONDITION : small loss of what appears to be black taffeta on the reverse, rubbing of threads on the front, particularly around the “V” shape.

Antique French Ecclesiastical Cope Hood. Cloth of Gold Ground. Embroidered Silver metallic Stump Work Pelican surrounded by Gold metallic three dimensional roses. Gold metallic tassel trim and border. Dating from 19th century. Antique condition with general signs of wear (marks, loose missing threads) commensurate with age and use. Photographic lights make gold colour appear brighter than it actually is in natural daylight. Close up photos are actual colours. SIZE:- 25 inches high x 20 inches wide. Not including fringe which is 2.5. All non paying buyers are then permanently blocked from all our future auctions.
