> Piece measures 14.5 inches tall, including the 2.25 inch base. > Piece is made of carved wood that was covered with plaster, smoothed and sculpted, and then painted. > Priest is wearing an ornately decorated red, blue and gold habit with crosses at the front and back, and a tall priest’s hat with a cross on the front. > Priest is holding a bible in his left hand and his right hand is raised. > Figure is positioned on a multilevel square base. > Weight is 20.2 ounces. 1600s, and from Peru. CONDITION: Colors are still evident, but have faded. The bottom of the figure detached from the top of the base at some point, and there are signs of old glue in that area. The figure stands fine upon the base without being re-glued, and we will not attempt to make any repair. The tip of the priest’s shoe, which is included, came loose at some point, and we re-positioned that with a small amount of gentle adhesive, just enough to hold it in place. The left hand in the wrist area has a chip about 1/2 inch long. For some reason, the priest’s hands are reddish brown, in a tone much darker than the pale flesh tone of his face. The European influence in these paintings came from the Spanish who tried to convert the Incas to Catholicism. Cusco Paintings are characterized by their exclusive use of religious images, lack of perspective, and the predominance of red, yellow, and earth colors. They also use a lot of gold leaf.
