The pendant features the Virgin Mary crafted in warm 18 karat yellow gold. She is set among lustrous enamel work comprised of a rainbow of colored cells. The elaborate frame is crafted in platinum over gold, decorated with small rose and single cut diamonds with cultured pearls. The pendant has a closed back and measures 1 3/8 inches high (excluding the bail), 7/8 of an inch wide. Pendant is unmarked but tests 18k & platinum with a total weight of 4.2 grams. Here is an exquisite example of religious jewelry, dating to 1925. Pieces of this quality and condition are rare! The pendant measures about 1-1/8 across, weighs 5.9 grams and is 18K yellow gold, with a platinum front set with rose diamonds. The figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary in profile is carved mother-of-pearl, not rubbed down or showing any wear. There is a border of tiny natural seed pearls. The outstanding workmanship of this piece is shown in the translucent, heavenly blue plique-à-jour (“glimpse the day”) enamel set in 18K gold rays. My photos don’t show it well, but light shines through the enamel. This enameling technique, popular in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, has just about died out as it is very difficult and expensive to create a piece, often requiring many attempts. On the back of the pendant is engraving showing the date of presentation (December 28, 1925), and florid initials. The pendant has been cleaned but not repolished. It is ready to wear, or to present as the best Christmas gift ever! If you’ve previously looked for pieces of this quality and complexity, you will have noticed that they cost several thousand dollars. Don’t pass this one up, as there’s only one! This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE CROSS PENDANT that was made in the ART DECO period of c1925 – c1935. It is HANDMADE from PLATINUM (top) and 18K GOLD (back). The cross is set with 1 OLD SINGLE CUT DIAMOND and 1 TINY ROSE CUT DIAMOND that have a total weight of approx. The cross is detailed with 2 SYNTHETIC BLUE SAPPHIRES that weigh approx. Synthetic colored stones were common for the period. The cross measures 1-9/16 long, not including the bale, by 1-1/8 wide. The total weight is 2.5 grams.
