Rare Antique 1894 Madonna di Loreto Medal – Catholic Protection Pendant Italy. SIZE: 3.3 x 4.0 CM. WEIGHT: 14.2 GRAMS. It is crafted in bronze or brass tone metal, showing beautiful age patina and fine relief detail. Front Side (Obverse): Features the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus seated atop the Holy House of Loreto, being carried by cherubs (angels), symbolizing the miraculous translation of the Holy House from Nazareth to Loreto. The surrounding inscription reads: “VI CENTENARIO DALLA TRASLAZIONE” (6th Centenary of the Translation) and the date “1894-95″ is engraved at the bottom. Back Side (Reverse): Depicts the Madonna di Loreto, crowned and dressed in rich robes, flanked by floral ornamentation. The inscription around the border reads: “MADONNA DI LORETO” and O. Spectacular pair 19th century. They are very heavy. They have three pictures on them. One Jesus, a Dove (the Spirit), and God the Father. They are believed to be church alter candlesticks. Extremely old I did not clean them. I do not know the exact metal I believe them to be bronze and expert might know I just know they’re very amazing very old and very special approx 21″ tall x 7″ wide at the base feet. A fantastic pair of the Trinity.

A genuine medieval manuscript fragment on vellum, written in a fine Carolingian minuscule hand, dating from the 10th to very early 11th century A. This narrow strip of parchment once formed part of a large liturgical manuscript (likely a Missal or Sacramentary) produced in a Swiss or German scriptorium, quite possibly St. Gallen Abbey, one of the greatest centers of Carolingian learning and book production. The fragment was later recycled as binding material in a ca. 1485 Basel incunable, where it remained hidden for centuries before being recovered. Script: Clear and rounded Carolingian minuscule, the ancestor of modern handwriting. Decoration: Contains a red rubricated initial and additional red highlighting of sacred text. Text: From the Latin liturgy; fragments of prayers and chants. See photos. Condition: As expected for recycled binding waste; vellum trimmed narrow, with some staining and creasing. Script remains sharp and legible. Carolingian manuscript fragments are exceedingly rare on the market, far scarcer than later Gothic leaves. The survival of this fragment offers collectors and institutions a chance to own an authentic piece of early medieval book history, over 1,000 years old. ? Comparable examples: The style and script closely resemble manuscripts preserved at St. Gallen Abbey Library Cod. Provenance. Written in a monastic scriptorium in Switzerland or southern Germany, ca. Simply a very desirable example, that would be the main talking point in anyone’s Collection. Measures approximately 1.25 (3.00 cms) inches tall and approximately 0.70 inch (1.65 cms) wide. Retains the original top drilled hole for the provision of a cord for hanging around the neck of the wearer. A unique and highly-important ancient historical artefact. Found in the early 1960s in a country house clearance.
