Rare antique Catholic devotional sick call / travel wallet, dating to the early 20th century. The black leather case features compartments with a brass crucifix and two devotional medals. Inside is an original yellow identification card noting ecclesiastical approval. Grace, the Most Reverend George W. Mundelein himself was one of the most influential Catholic leaders in America in the early 20th century, often called “Cardinal of the West, ” and helped expand Catholic institutions nationwide-including through the Catholic Extension Society, which your wallet bears. The identification card is filled out to E. Campbell, 1440 Beach St. While not extensively documented, the Campbell name appears in Vallejo directories as property owners during this era, giving this set both devotional and local Northern California historical provenance. The Campbells were known as large landowners in Solano County and involved in real estate development in Vallejo during the interwar years. 4″ x 3″ when closed. Leather case with wear consistent with age. Medals and crucifix show patina/oxidation, enhancing its antique character. This devotional kit would have been carried for use in prayer and as spiritual identification “in case of accident or illness, ” a practice encouraged for Catholics in the early 20th century. Condition: Good antique condition with wear to case, age patina to medals and crucifix, some oxidation (see photos). ID card remains legible with clear Vallejo name and address.
