IT WAS FOUND IN THE ATTIC OF A NOW CLOSED NUNS CONVENT AND IS AN ORIGINAL PIECE BY THE ARTIST JOSEPH MALACHY KAVANAGH AND IS HAND PAINTED ON CANVAS AND FRAMED IN AN ELEGANT GOLD FINISHED WOOD FRAME THAT IS 21 3/4 INCHES TALL BY 18 3/4 INCHES WIDE AND 3 INCHES DEEP. IT IS SIGNED BY JOSEPH MALACHY KAVANAGH WHO WAS A FAMOUS IRISH PAINTER WHO WAS BORN IN DUBLIN, IRELAND IN 1856 AND DIED IN DUBLIN APRIL 2, 1918. This is a superb antique mixed media artwork of “Our Lady of Sorrows”. I do not see a signature anywhere on the artwork and it is. Housed in a tiered gold and brown frame protected behind glass. The dimensions are: Frame: 16.0 inches wide, 17.5 inches tall and 1.5 inches deep. Image: 9.5 inches wide and 7.0 inches tall. This stunning hand painted and hand crafted pendant measures 1 1/2″ long (not including the ring) by 1 1/4″ wide by 3/4 thick. The case is brass and the delicately painted artwork is done on porcelain. I estimate that the piece is from the mid to late 19th century. Framework that has undergone a conservative restoration and color recovery in some points (see picture). Panel which, seen from the back, has 3 non-period wooden additions (see picture): lower band, small left side band and small graft (see picture) inserted during the restoration phase to complete the panel.
