German sampler dated 1819 with the initials “DW” and “AH” in a central cartouche along with the date. Very fine linen fabric with tiny silk stitches, mostly cross stitches but there is a wonderful square of satin stitches combined with chain stitches. The red vertical line down the center of the sampler is red thread woven into the linen. The backing fabric is a little darker than it appears in the closeup photos. There is a wonderful variety of borders and motifs flowers and leafy borders, religious and cottage scenes, alphabets and geometric pattern squares. Condition is generally good. While there is some damage along the edges and scattered small holes to the ground fabric, the fabric is sturdy and supple, not at all brittle. The silk threads have retained their colors nicely and there is no thread loss. The sampler measures 10-1/4 wide by 11-1/4 high. This is a beautiful sampler which has been meticulously worked with great precision by the very skilled young hand of 11 year old Ann Saunders in 1836, and signed and dated at the bottom. Set out to look like open pages by the text, and with the lower third given over to a series of finely worked spot motifs, including crowns, birds, flowers in urns, hearts, trees with birds, animals, the whole surrounded by an intricate border. Sampler is long undisturbed in its frame. Please see the photos, this is a wonderful sampler, in its antique frame. A unique and interesting sampler which would make a wonderful addition to a collection or unique gift for a special occasion. 35 x 56 cms inc frame.
