This is a stirring and thought-provoking Antique Vintage Mid Century Modern Surrealist Abstract Angel Mystery Painting, airbrush paint (acrylic or oil) on canvas. This work is very unique and unusual, it is created with an airbrush paint machine and stencils for the larger shapes, with hand applied oil or acrylic paint for the finer details. The brush strokes are barely visible, but they are present. In all of mt years of dealing in Mid Century artworks, I have acquired two pieces three pieces produced by this technique. It was very uncommon for the era and cutting edge in many ways. This work depicts a mysterious silhouette of the archangel Gabriel, with a stern facial expression and holding a large sword in his right hand. Gabriel’s head is surrounded by a corona of holy fire, and his body is patinated with the image of a mysterious floral pattern, possibly a reference to the garden of Eden. This work was acquired from an abandoned old multi-million-dollar estate in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. This work is unsigned, but perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? This painting approximately dates to the late 1950’s – 1960’s. Approximately: 25 3/4 x 35 1/8 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 19 1/4 x 28 1/2 inches. Good condition, with some very light scuffing and edge wear to the original period frame. Canvas has some light scuffs in the lower left corner please see photos. This is a profound and masterful RARE Antique Modern French Surrealist Expressionist Oil Painting on canvas, by the important early French Surrealist painter Jean Janin 1899 – 1970. This work depicts the Biblical destruction of ancient Sodom & Gomorrah, and central to this scene is Lot’s wife, who looked back at the destruction and was turned into a Pillar of Salt by God. Surrounding her are two fearful looking angels in the top right, and several groups of people and animals fleeing for their lives in sheer terror and awe at the mighty wrath of God. This is one of the most powerful artistic renditions of the biblical event that I have ever seen, or probably ever will in the future. Approximately 31 3/8 x 37 3/8 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 25 x 31 inches. Signed: “Jean Janin” in the lower right corner. This work approximately dates to the 1920’s – 1930’s. Good condition for age, with very fine craquelure throughout please see photos. This work has never been published or shown before, and ranks among the very best of Janin’s artistic output. Jean Janin was born in 1898, in Geneva, Switzerland, to French parents; he was a painter and a designer. His paintings were of scenes with Art Deco and surreal figures, often with allegorical themes, he also designed stage sets and wall decorations. Janin trained at the art school in Geneva, then at the Académie Ranson in Paris. In 1923 began to exhibit in Paris at the main annual salons. In 1929, he and the American William Gwinn founded the Children’s Traveling Theater. He did a great deal of decorative work and produced screens, lacquer panels and mosaics for Poissy town hall. This is an intriguing and enigmatic Antique Mid Century Modern Abstract Impressionist Fauve Oil Painting on canvas, depicting three humanoid figures in a colorful and surrealistic outdoor setting. A red figure stands stoically, while the blue figure animatedly raises his arms in the hair. To their right, a yellow figure of a woman kneels in front of a small cross on the ground. She appears to hold an infant. This figure may represent the Virgin Mary and Jesus. In the lower right. I could not find any information on this particular artist, but perhaps you recognize the painter or their work? Good condition overall, with some light edge wear. Stretcher bars are slightly askew, and the painting does not lay flat against the wall. It is recommended that this work is removed from this stretcher and attached to a new set of stretcher bars, for optimal display purposes please see photos. Approximately 24 1/4 x 30 inches. MODERN BRITISH RELIOUS OIL PAINTING. He exhibited widely at The Cooling galleries and The New England Art Club and this bears a Bourlet label for exhibition transportation. An almost Surreal Modern British religious artwork from the 1930’s and a very interesting painting. A vary rare to find artist who is highly sought after. Artists details verso, is it signed and titled with the artists address. Bourlet exhibition labels verso. Tempera painting on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good gallery condition. Housed in a fine gallery frame, 32 inches by 27 inches and in good condition. Lunn was born in Preston and moved to Surbiton in 1918. He studied at Kingston School of Art and won a scholarship to Royal Academy. He won the Edward Abbey Mural Scholarship. Lunn taught at the Kingston School of Art. He showed at NEAC, Cooling Galleries, London Group, Royal Academy and elsewhere. In 1985 Lunn held a solo show at the Michael Parkin’s Gallery.
