BEAUTIFUL 19th CENTURY SILK & METALLIC THREAD EMBROIDERY, SPANISH, RELIGIOUS. Early 19th century most likely of Spanish origin, believed to depict St. John carrying the infant Jesus. Large panel 68cm x 49cm, Framed 87cm x 67cm. The silk is showing signs of age in Places, but is generally ok damage is at the edges, it is framed behind Perspex, this is damaged in several places, the pine frame is in good condition, The back board needs replacing, you would probably want to change the Perspex to glass or totally re- frame. German sampler dated 1819 with the initials “DW” and “AH” in a central cartouche along with the date. Very fine linen fabric with tiny silk stitches, mostly cross stitches but there is a wonderful square of satin stitches combined with chain stitches. The red vertical line down the center of the sampler is red thread woven into the linen. The backing fabric is a little darker than it appears in the closeup photos. There is a wonderful variety of borders and motifs flowers and leafy borders, religious and cottage scenes, alphabets and geometric pattern squares. Condition is generally good. While there is some damage along the edges and scattered small holes to the ground fabric, the fabric is sturdy and supple, not at all brittle. The silk threads have retained their colors nicely and there is no thread loss. The sampler measures 10-1/4 wide by 11-1/4 high.
