Old /antique Indian Tribal silver pendant. This is a Old Silver Tribal pendant. The pendant was originally made and worn by the tribal gypsy people of Rajasthan in Northern India. It features the Goddess Kali. Kali is an extremly powerful figure who signifies both creation and destruction and represents Mother Nature. She is worn in India as a very strong protection amulet. I bought the pendant in Rajastan myself. It is 60-150 years old, and is extremely pure fine silver with 98% purity. (Sterling silver is 92.5%). The hoop at the top is 4.3 mm internally, which is big enough for the clasp of a small silver chain to pass through it. The pendant is 3 cm acoss and 5 cm high. I will send the pendant on a length of very strong black cotton cord, tied into an adjustable length slip knot. I have been making my living exclusively from designing and making jewellery for 9 years. I travel every year to seek out old and tribal silver from Asia and India along with semi-precious stones. Back at home in Brighton, England, I make these loose pieces up into beautiful and unusal jewellery. Dimensions : 9.0″ by 5.5″ by 4.0. Weight : 216 grams; 0.48 lbs; 7.6 oz. Overall Condition : Used, eroded statue. This is a Shaman exorcism mask, hand-carved by a Tharu Shaman. The Tharu people inhabit the Terai region of Nepal and some areas of Tibet as Well. Shamanic masks like this are used in religious rituals, festivals and exorcisms by shamans and sometimes by monks. Nepalese and Tibetan Masks are one of the symbols that better represent the culture and traditions of people living in the Himalayan region. The ritual of wearing masks is very old and it comes from animists. Himalayan tribes used to worship spirits of nature and guardians of these majestic mountains. The Shamans of these tribes used to wear masks during rituals they use to perform in order to protect the village, heal diseases, practice exorcisms or other purposes. Masks supposedly had a very important functions in the social life of these community as they were used also during theatrical representations and ceremonies dedicated to ancestors. Hindu and Buddhist cultures that became dominant in the surrounding regions, slowly replaced the myths of this shamanic cult. However some of the old costumes survived. Even spirits and demons were adopted by the Buddhist tradition and some of them became wrathful protectors of the Buddhist doctrine. These are objects acquired from more than 3 0 years of collecting both in the field and in New York. It has culminated in the creation of Ethnix Tribal Arts gallery on Broadway, New York City.
