Antique Bronze Vishnu “The Protector”, Khmer (Cambodia) mounted on black base. Origin: Temple Precinct, Northern District, Cambodia. A classical bronze-cast antique Khmer style Vishnu bust, sculpted in the popular late Angkor / early Bayon style, an ancient mix of Hindu and Buddhist art and culture. In the 12th century, King Suryavarman II, ruler of the khmer empire, built his temple-mausoleum of Angkor Wat dedicated to Vishnu, one of the gods of the Brahmanic trinity; the god of preservation and protection. This beautiful and sensitive preservation of Vishnu is redolent of the work done by artisans of the northern Khmer provinces. In particular, the Vishnu portrait was a popular motif in the 12th Century. The casting and detailing on display here, as with most Khmer sculpture, is excellent, with very subtle hints of gold across the general patina. Portraits of Vishnu, among other deities, would have been on display in the most sacred and revered shrines within the great temples of the Angkor Era, emblazoned with gold finery, colourful banners and surrounded by incense and jewels. Bronze, a mixture of metals consisting primarily of copper and tin, was a preferred medium for giving form to the Hindu and Buddhist divinities worshipped in Angkor and throughout the Khmer empire.
