Antique 18th-19th Century Ethiopian Bible Manuscript Leaf – Ge’ez Script on Parchment. A Beautiful Piece of Ethiopian Christian History – Approximately 100-300 Years Old. Offered here is a fascinating antique Ethiopian Bible manuscript leaf, traditionally dated to the 18th or 19th century (1700s-1800s). Written in the ancient Ge’ez language, this remarkable piece represents Ethiopia’s centuries-old tradition of preserving Christian scripture through beautifully crafted religious manuscripts. A Window Into an Ancient Christian Tradition. Ethiopia possesses one of the world’s oldest continuous Christian traditions, dating to the fourth century AD. For centuries, Ethiopian monks and scribes carefully reproduced sacred texts by hand, often using parchment prepared from animal skins. These manuscripts preserved biblical scripture, prayers, and religious teachings for generations. This leaf displays the distinctive bold black Ethiopic lettering, accented by occasional red characters and markings traditionally associated with Ethiopian religious manuscripts. Origin: Ethiopia Estimated Date: 18th-19th century (1700s-1800s) Identification: Ethiopian Bible manuscript leaf Language: Ge’ez (Classical Ethiopic) Material: Parchment Dimensions: Approximately 5¾ × 3¾ inches Writing: Black Ethiopic script with red accents Format: Double-sided manuscript leaf Condition: Age-related discoloration, irregular edges, and minor surface wear consistent with an older manuscript Presentation: Displayed in a black glass frame. Unlike modern printed Bibles, traditional Ethiopian manuscripts were produced within a religious culture that valued the preservation of sacred writings. The Ge’ez language remains important in Ethiopian Orthodox Christian worship today, even though it is no longer widely spoken as an everyday language. The script, red accents, and aged appearance give this leaf a striking historical character. An intriguing addition to a collection of. Antique biblical manuscripts Christian religious artifacts Ethiopian and African history Ancient languages and writing systems Historical documents and parchment manuscripts. A beautiful conversation piece representing Ethiopia’s extraordinary Christian literary heritage.
