Antique / Victorian, gilt on metal, gothic altar icon casket, depicting medieval style scenes, on all sides and lid. The scenes seem to depict the life of Christ, those on the front and lid seem to show the nativity. Each side has different scene and there is a knight in one, a beast in another and what appears to be a king and queen in a different panel. The box is lined in wood (probably cedar wood). It is very heavy for its size and it potentially cast in brass. High quality and crisp casting detail. Please note that you may find other examples of this design of box however, most are casts of casts, so the detailing can be of blurred low quality. Dated around 1880 – 1900. Good condition for age, but the gilding is worn in areas, plus some superficial scratches. 15cm width, 9.5cm depth and 7.5cm height. Makers mark to the understand, which I cannot identify. Here is a superbly detailed antique Victorian brass gothic casket depicting medieval style scenes on all sides and the lid. The scenes seem to depict the life of Christ, those on the lid seem to show the nativity. Each of the sides have a different scene and there are various figures, some seemingly carrying crosses. The u=interior of this casket is unlined. This is a very inticately detailed box. One of the end panel (the left hand one, when looking from the front of the box) has been attached upside down (see fourth photograph)! The casket has the right amount of patina, with a polished finish, but not overly so. There is a tab to the lid. The hinges are sound and strong. The box measures about 4.75 inches (12 cm) long, 2.25 inches (5.6 cm) high and 2.9 inches (7.2 cm) wide. Ostal Price Increases to the United States. Wonderful antique French chocolatier or confectioner’s box, a casket for chocolates with religious Mary with Child & Jesus miniatures framed in ornate gilt pressed card. To this end, we’ve had fine chocolates boxes in everything from tortoise shell to crystal and dore bronze, but this one is printed silk over a cotton-padded box lid, as you can see. This was a house of confection. The earliest confectioner’s boxes were all very small, showing you how the relative value of the rare 1700s imported chocolate (cocoa) became less so over time, yet still warranted a hand made and elegant box. I love this old French tradition. The original paper label on the bottom reads “Firmin Semezis, Distillerie, Confiserie, Rue Neuve du Pont 7, Villeneuve Sur Lot”. Very good condition for age and type, there is very little wear to the corners as you can see in our images. Must have been treasured well over the century. Due to the fragile nature of these, they become more and more available as the centuries pass. Collect them – they’re going up in value all the time. There appears to be missing ribbons on the exterior lid, evidenced by the darkened lines. The interior retains the original paper lining and delicate lace around the sides. There are white glass ball feet on only one side of the box, missing on the other side. I’ll see if we have something that will work as replacements. Otherwise, removing the two existing feet would likely go unnoticed. Measurements are on the photos. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! Our fine inventory is very important.
