Height: 7.67 inches / 19.5 centimeters. Width: 4.72 inches / 12 centimeters. Depth: 1.96 inches / 5 centimeters. Item condition: Good condition with minor flaws, consistent with age and use. Missing 2 fingers, 1 from the right hand and 1 from the left. Minor flaws on polychrome and sculpture. See photos for complete assessment. The hands have the actual dimensions of a female human. The Santos dolls take their name from the Spanish word for Saint, and are also known as Santons (French) and Santibelli (Italian). The Santos that started the genre of dolls we currently represent (primarily Spanish Colonial and Western European style), were originally started as copies of 17th century carvings by priests. Originally, Santos were created for use as in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war. Their development flourished in Europe in the 1700’s and 1800’s, primarily due to these wars. Santos dolls are closely related to the Crèche figures, which were implemented in Italy by St Francis of Assisi, during the 13th century. However, the Crèche are primarily associated with Italian and French nativity and crib scenes. Crèche scenes are still elaborately displayed throughout Italy and in parts of France, most notably in Provence. The bust can be separated from her skirt. This is a real museum piece for the serious collector. Provenance: Given the testimony of the former owner, this Joan of Arc sculpture was an order from a French bourgeoisie. To a Spanish frontier workshop for a French private chapel in the 18th century. This is a stunningly rare antique 18th century life-sized hand carved solid wood wall mount Jesus Christ sculpture. It is a very large sculpture and once displayed in a church in Italymeasures 61 inches tall by 19 inches wide. It is carved with an abundance of very intricate detailing, from a solid piece of wood, and has acquired a wonderful patina from age. It is very lifelike and extremely dimensional. Jesus is depicted in his long robe standing on a cluster of beautifully carved clouds and has a sacred heart at his chest done in high relief. His hands are extremely lifelike and is shown giving peace wile his hand have large open wounds. The back is cut flat to be able to hang flush on a wall and has a very large iron hanging hook. It is in nice antique condition with normal hairlines and knots from being natural wood. It is in very nice antique condition and is extremely rare. I have been dealing in high quality religious artifacts for many years and this on is truly as good as it gets. Which will be a charge of 7% due to New Jersey state law. These are very hard to find figures, they were usually ordered by the upper bourgeoisie that required them for their private chapels. She comes in 2 parts. The bust can be separated from her “skirt” sort of speech. The bust is attached with the under body by still the original iron hooks, this hook is also present on the left arm, that particular hook keeps the arm in a certain postion to hold baby Jesus. As you can see in the picture on this hand there is a wooden pin, this pin was there to secure that baby. The baby is not available anymore. Her face is so beautiful, she has a stunning expression with real glass eyes and pierced ears. This Santos Cage Doll comes from Italy and is still in really perfect condition considering this one is around 300 years old. Just a little chunk is missing on her hips. Under the majesty of silk dresses, crowns, symbols and other attributes made of gold or silver, these images hide a primitive, coarse and disproportionate skeleton of wood, which is simply irresistible.
