Original 1794 10 1/8 inch x 12 inch Etching and Engraving titled THE ANNUNCIATION On the right, the Virgin Mary kneeling and turning to the left; an open book in front of her; on the left, Archangel Gabriel, in profile, walking towards the right on a cloud; in the front middle a basket with knitting needles, a ball of wool, and a piece of knitting. Print made by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728 – 1815). The engraver and painter Francesco Bartolozzi was a Founder Member of the Royal Academy who served as engraver to the King for almost 40 years. He engraved works by several of his fellow Royal Academicians, including Angelica Kauffman, Benjamin West and Joshua Reynolds. From the painting by William Hamilton (1751 – 1801). A major eighteenth century historical painter, William Hamilton studied art in Rome and was apprenticed to Antonio Zucchi. He trained first as an architectural draftsman, but soon moved to theatrical portraits and scenes from plays. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1774, becoming an Associate in 1784 and an Academician in 1789. Published by Thomas Macklin (1752/3 1800), Poets Gallery, Fleet Street. Parade Antiques and Collectables. William Henry Pike RA Religious Antique Oil Painting Palazzo Dario Venice. An oil on canvas painting of’a Religious mission’ on the paved streets outside the’Palazzo Dario in Venice’, signed William Henry Pike and dated 1884. Born in Plymouth, much of his early work captures the unspoilt coastline and landscape around that naval port. Around the period of 1884, he seems to have made a tour of Venice. Seemingly the city left an impression on him, as he produced numerous interpretations of its famous landmarks. The painting is a fine example of Pike’s late career, where the seriousness of age and the artistic heritage of Italy, saw him turn to historical and genre scenes. His use of oil paint during this period, seems to reflect his wish to be seen in more permanent terms. The painting shows a religious procession on a paved street, near to the Ponte San Cristoforo. The iconic landside façade of the Palazzo Dario, esteemed by John Ruskin, comprises the backdrop of the painting, whilst on the left, the narrow Rio delle Torreselle canal flows towards a high spire in the distance. Twenty-four years after this painting, the Palazzo Dario was painted several times by Claude Monet. Though unframed, the condition of the painting is very good.
