This massively framed oil on canvas dates ca. 41 x 31 overall; 35 x 25 actual, it depicts Christ meeting his grieving Mother on the way to Calvary. A burly Roman on horseback tries to maintain order and the artist give us an intimate glimpse at the faces of his torturers, one of them holding fresh spikes in his hand. The colors are rich, and the details are superbly rendered; it is acceptably clean with stable paint and there is a LONG horizontal tear with loss as well as a big tear in the gold robe of Mary Magdalene and some losses along the bottom edge. I see some small spots of old in-paint as well. The frame has been repainted and is loose at the corner; one blue rosette is gone. Please study close-ups to be ascertain the condition of the artwork. Its frame has dry old varnish surface and is missing some trim on the inside corner upper left.
