Description: These prints are the complete 1650 edition of the’Visiones Apocalypticae’, originally published in 1585 in’Thesaurus Novi Testamenti, Icones Revelationum S. Iho[anne]s Evangeliste in Pathmo’. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by: De Jode after Snellinck. Published by Joannes Galle in 1784. Jan Snellinck Mechelen c. 1548-Antwerp 1638 was a Flemish artist and art collector. Gerard de Jode (Nijmegen 1509-Antwerp 1591) was a cartographer, engraver and publisher who worked in Antwerp during the 16th century. His best known work is the two-volume atlas Speculum Orbis Terrarum, published in 1578, created as competition for a similar atlas by Abraham Ortelius. Subject: Original antique print, titled:’Visiones Apocalypticae’. It shows: 24 small square prints on 6 sheets, each with a 4-line Latin caption and reference to relevant Bible passages. Together this scarce set of engravings illustrates the Book of Revelation (Book of Apocalypse), the final book of the New Testament, and deals with the Christian notions of eschatology. It includes extravagant imagery such as the Lion of Judah (a seven-horned lamb with seven eyes), scoprion-tailed locusts, the False Prophet and the Whore of Babylon. Condition: Excellent given age.
