Antique 18th Century Silver Gilt Architecture Bronze Sculpture Holy Family Italy
This superb mid to late 1700s panel from an architectural screen is cast in bronze with silvered surface and fire gilt accents and measures 10 x 8 alone; 14 x 12 in its later (1880s) distressed lemon gold picture frame. The panel appears to be based on a Mannerist master work and depicts the Holy family with St. John the Baptist in a landscape setting with distant architecture. The Child Jesus appears to be handing a rose to His stepfather and both Mary an John look on worshipfully. All of the faces are beautifully rendered; I especially enjoy the faces of the cherubs in the sky who look on. The back of the panel is thick and somewhat irregular and the face of the artwork is extensively hand-worked with chased and engraved details under the silver. There is expected wear to the silver and gold in the high places and the surface is very dirty/un-polished. I see no makers mark. The foreshortening in josephs face suggest this panel was intended to be viewed when mounted in an elevated position.
