Antique Oil painting on Canvas Cusco School
Paintings, antiques and objects of art. Over 46 years in the trade. A fine and rare example of Cusco School, circa 1770/1790’s Oil on canvas 56 cm x 43 cm, gilt-framed, oil painting on canvas, portraying Madonna. Exquisitely executed in Latin American/Spanish icon. The Cuzco School was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru (the former capital of the Inca Empire) during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The tradition and European influence in these paintings originated after the 1534 Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Drawing from the techniques of the past, modern Cusco paintings executed by the local artists are characterized by their use of exclusive religious subjects and the predominance of red, yellow and earth colours. They are also remarkable for their use of the gold leaf. They often adopt the topics to depict their native flora and fauna as a backdrop in their works. Also known as a Cocharcas Virgin depiction. An exquisite portrait, the details are richly embellished with bronze leaf, as indicative of the artists of the Cusco School of Painting. Looking at the exquisite facial features and the colour composition, it is just simply amazing. This remarkable painting has some subtle high-relief details. Bronze Leaf was used to accentuate finishing touches on this magnificent portrait. The history of the Peruvian painting has its origins at the colonial era. The Spanish painters who arrived at the Vice Royalty of Peru taught their techniques to the local artists, and they began to shape in its linen cloths its own representations, proposing a new iconographic interpretation of the Peruvian reality. The Catholic divinities were adapted to indigenous sensitivity which gave like the result of their own and singular style that had its maxim expression in the “School of Cusco Painting” (La Escuela Cusqueña), during centuries XVII and XVIII. This painting has been done in the style of the works of La Escuela Cusqueña, the history of which is traced to the 17th century. Originally influenced by Spanish and Italian artists, this school was commissioned to paint sacred art in churches and monasteries throughout the Peruvian city of Cusco after the area was devastated by an earthquake in 1650. The collected efforts of numerous artists gradually evolved into a unique yet harmonious and consistent style, devoid of individualism. Now, this is a highly sought-after style both here in Europe and especially in the US and S America. Frame size 21.7 x 27 inches (54.5 x 70 cms). Painting 17 x 22 inches (43 x 56 cms).
