This fresh-to-the-marketplace authentic, original oil painting on wood panel with applied gilt gold leaf and typographic hieroglyphs Russian icon painting of’The Madonna with the Christ Child’ or’The Mother of Perpetual Help,’ features gilt, gold leaf applique to the background around the central figures. The oil enamel paint is largely unblemished, with only some minor scuffs and perhaps some very slight abrasions and some minor discoloration found mostly on the gilt gold leaf. There appears to be a very small break in the paint film and a slight’T’-shaped’lift’ in the paint film just under one of the hands of the Madonna, gently and affectionately supporting the Christ child in her lap. The wood panel is slightly relaxed and rounded at the corners and it isn’t entirely square. This is the work of an experienced painter and not an amateur. It also features the kind of stylization seen in many other contemporary 19th century Russian icon paintings on wood panel. The figures emanate static, sublime spirituality and emotional presence, which makes this stylized graphic iconography of The Madonna with The Christ Child or The Mother of Perpetual Help, particularly exciting and memorable. This is not a’faux,’ laid down printed paper icon image, glued to a wood panel. This is rather, a bonafide, real, exhaustively examined antique Russian icon painting on wood panel and not a reproduction, not a fake and certainly not some kind of later 20th century facsimile of the real thing.
