This powerful Italian old master oil on canvas was painted in the mid to late 1600’s and was acquired from a 3 generation family collection in Chicago, Illinois about 30 years ago. It measures 40 x 30 and depicts the Madonna and child with St. Joseph and Saint John the Baptist: the Christ Child is looking very earnestly at his older cousin (who is kneeling and wearing his Agnus Dei banner) and offering him a corner of his swaddling wrap. The rich traditional renaissance palette and composition are given added force from the powerful baroque -inspired figures and the dramatic lighting which accents the face of the Virgin and Child Jesus. Halos are depicted as tongues of fire which lend their own illumination to the scene. This work was very dirty when acquired with distressed tack edges and late 1800s relining. The relining was stable, so the tack edges were remade and affixed with copper tacks. A cleaning was undergone by a professional recommended by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The resulting work is at once gentle and commanding. There is scattered in paint especially along the edges and an area of inpaint in the center where an old tear was repaired. The work is stable and beautiful. The free listing tool. The item “Antique Italian Old Master Painting Holy Family St John Baptist Mary 1600s” is in sale since Monday, July 18, 2016.
