Vintage Sterling Silver Yalalag Cross Pendant. This is such a wonderful piece of Mexican fol k art jewelry to add to your wardrobe. It’s a vintage artisan piece. The base metal is sterling silver. It is stamped accordingly. The Yalalag cross necklace originated in Salamanca, Spain and was brought to Mexico by the friars during the colonial period. Traditionally, they were made in the village of San Juan Yalalag, Sierra De Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico and worn by the women. William Pescott states: ” They [Spanish Missionaries] could not suppress their wonder as they beheld the cross, the sacred emblem of their own faith raised as an object of worship in the temples of Ahahuac ” Conquest of Mexico Vol. It’s in lovely condition, no dents or major scratches. There is a silver patina seen throughout. Alecki has chosen not to high polish this piece ensure authenticity. The necklace can be slightly altered in size. It measures 23 along the neckline. The large front cross measures 3 1/2 from the top of the bail to the bottom of the smaller cross.
