This gilded silver chalice combines the beauty of Byzantine design with the elegance of Roman and Gothic craftsmanship in an eclectic masterpiece. The intricacy of this chalice stems not only from the multiplicity of styles at work but with the various gracefully combined materials utilized such as sky-blue pearls, enamel, in addition to touches of silver and many varieties of gold. Acanthus leaves adorn the bottom of the chalice supported with diverse scenes engraved portraying Jesus Christ passing on his mission to the 12 Apostles following him; whereas in the background stands the ravishing image of sacred Jerusalem and a palm. At the bottom of the stem rise four embossed acanthus leaves, separated by sky-blue pearls, in which sits individual “enameled” representations of the four gospel writers. Going up the stem, eight pearls elegantly rest equal in beauty and style to the ones at the bottom surrounded by engravings, which add a touch of grandeur and exquisiteness to the esthetics of this chalice. Four graceful acanthus leaves seem to effortlessly hold the cup which exhibits tasteful engravings of lilies and crosses in an ogival rotary shape. Towards the middle of the cup lay three glossy lilies in a fluid design on a matte background with a blue pearl in the center. This design repeats itself four times around the cup, which symbolizes the four cardinal points. In between, lie intricately engraved medallions representing the four cardinal virtues, Justice, Prudence, Fortitude and Temperance. This work of art was delicately handcrafted by la Maison Favier, a well renowned craftsman from Lyon, France. The paten is in very good condition and depicts an image of the Holy Communion engraved in a circular medallion on the back. The chalice sits in its original wooden box. The gold plating is in very good condition. The chalice and the paten are in solid silver with French silver hallmarks (Minerva) and Faviers stamps.
